Top 10 Amazon Products for Self-Care
Updated: Aug 23, 2019
In previous articles I've talked about taking time for yourself and doing things you enjoy. Self-care should be fun, relaxing and make you feel like you just had an entire weekend with the Queer Eye crew. While I love going to a spa or paying for an incredible wellness service, I can't always find the time or the cash. That's when I convinced myself to take the time for self care by ordering a small box of goodies from Amazon that will get me excited to take that time. It's like getting yourself a gift that you've been wanting for a long time, but haven't taken the leap because it's not an item of necessity.
These Amazon finds are affordable, reusable, promote happiness, and are better for the environment than most treatments you'll get anywhere else. Just add some water, wine and a good podcast and let's get to it.
1. Always add something that works your brain, in a relaxing way. For me, that's a new book or journal. Below is one of my favorite journal options.
This book takes you through journal prompts in the form of lists. It guides you through listing things that make you happy, ways people you love would describe you and more. Not only does it make me feel happier as I fill it out, but it's gorgeous too. Each time I open it, I feel a little luxurious.
' Drawing on happiness research and her own personal philosophy, Moorea Seal creates an inspiring tool for list lovers everywhere to discover the keys to their own unique happiness and bring more joy and balance into their lives. This beautiful, undated hardcover journal with 52 listing prompts encourages readers to reflect, acknowledge, and invest in themselves, and ultimately transform their lives by figuring out exactly what makes them happy. Like Seal’s The 52 Lists Project, this keepsake journal comes in a luxurious package full of lush photography, charming illustrations, copper foil, and a lush red velvet ribbon."
2. Release negativity and tension. Most people can't afford regular massages or acupressure, but there are other ways to get these treatments at home. Meet your new frenemy:
Acupressure has been around for ages, for a reason. It probably looks and sounds weird as people describe it. Like, why would I pay someone money to poke me with needles? Well, because the more you use it, the happier your muscles feel. As we exercise/foam roll/get a massage, our muscles release built up toxins into our blood stream. This can cause you to feel worse later, but getting them out is better than keeping them in. If you have built up toxins, you could have low energy, difficulty sleeping, aches, pains and more. In order to make our bodies detox more effectively we need to eat healthy and exercise in some form.
I've mentioned before that my anxiety causes me to clench my muscles without realizing it. The first difference I noticed once I was put on medication was how loose my muscles felt. I had never realized how much tension I carried with me. The more stressed or anxious I get, the worse it gets. PTSD has been proven to cause tension headaches and I firmly believe mine stem from clenching my jaw, neck and shoulder muscles. I couldn't believe how much the acupressure mat and pillow have helped me to relax my muscles. Now I don't have to stress about making time or enough money to get bi-weekly or monthly massages, even though I would really love one daily.
Most of these mat sets cost upwards of $100, but this one is only $20. It has lasted me months so far. I haven't had a single problem with the quality.
" Pain Reduction – Naturally reduce muscle tension, back pain, and headaches by simply laying on the mat daily for 10-30 minutes. Acupressure releases endorphins that block pain, and helps relax the muscles in your back, neck and feet.
Full Support – The cushioned foam mat is large enough to fit your full back, and unlike many mats that only cover your back, this set includes a pillow covered in acupressure points for neck support and more holistic pain relief.
Relaxation & Stress Relief – Lay back and relax onto this “bed of needles” to massage pressure points that help release tight muscles and relieve stress. Use prior to bedtime to improve your rest and reduce insomnia.
Increased Energy & Circulation -Thousands of acupressure points stimulate nerves and improve blood circulation for increased energy and faster muscle recovery, making it great for users who sit at a desk daily, as well as active individuals and athletes.
High Quality – Made of 100% thick cotton & plant-based eco-foam, the acupressure mat has 6,210 acupressure points; neck pillow has 1,782 acupressure points "
Cruelty-Free Vegan Dry Brush and Massager
Another option to reduce toxins, is by using a dry brush on your skin. I love this one because it also has a massage head on the other side. Dry brushing is used to reduce cellulite, exfoliate and prep for self tanning, but people don't always realize it's also helping your lymphatic system to reduce those built up toxins. So not only will you have soft, glowing skin, but you're also doing your muscles a big favor. Even better is that this doesn't have a detachable head, which means it won't randomly pop off and interrupt your routine, it's cruelty-free and has shed-free bristles. As you can tell, I've tried a few of these over the years.
Similarly to the acupressure mat, dry brushing leads to increased circulation so you'll feel more energized and relaxed after each session.
" One side is a superior body brush, and the other is a sturdy, firm cellulite massager. Our cellulite massager nubs are firm enough to promote lymphatic draining and encourage the break up of fat deposits and fascia. Blast away the appearance of cellulite! This combination skin kit leads to smoother, dimple free skin, and it's convenient! No digging up a separate cellulite mitt -- everything you need is at your fingertips, morning or night. Help visibly smooth and firm your skin's appearance! Our unique vegan bristles are firm yet flexible to provide the ideal pressure to naturally exfoliate dead skin cells. Consistency is key to rejuvenate the appearance of dull or sagging skin."
3. Show your largest organ some love. At-home-masks are so popular right now, but they still don't make your skin as happy as going to get a facial at a spa. Well, I found a little secret to achieve better results.
Everyone has different skin concerns. Mine happens to be combination, but leaning towards ultra-dry. Once I purchased this at-home facial steamer, my masks began to make my skin feel like butter. Just add a small bit of water, turn on some music or an audiobook and turn it on.
" Nano-Ionic Steam: The Pure Daily Care Nano Steamer is a new type of steamer that combines a heating element with and ultra sonic vaporizer to produce nano steam with negatively charged ionic particles. Benefits for nano steaming up to 10x to promote blood circulation, improve cell vitality and oxygen absorption through skin for a healthier younger looking complexion."
Another reason why the spa facials feel more luxurious? They use those ultra-soft brushes to put on the moisturizing masks! This brush is a steal. I don't use it with all masks because some, like peel-off masks, are much easier to apply by hand. Otherwise, I use this obsessively. It's really easily to clean too so you won't go through the same hassle as you do with a paint brush or makeup brushes, just rinse under warm water immediately after use and you're good for your next facial.
" Smooth, soft and full, give extraordinary coverage for the face with this facial mask brush. Easier to use around those hard to reach and smaller sections of your face, such as your eyes and nose area. Won't hurt your skin, good item for make-up and useful. For applying facial masks, smoothing masks."
I started using this oil while I was pregnant because God forbid I end up with stretchmarks. Funnily enough, whether you get stretchmarks has more to do with genetics than moisturizing, but I ended up finding a product that I love. Rosehip oil is another ancient product that humans have been using for a long time, but isn't as well known in society's beauty regimens today.
My skin doesn't always absorb really thick oil like castor oil, but this rosehip oil made a difference in how happy my skin was after two uses. I've used it on my face for moisture and anti-aging as well as on my body for scars and stretch marks. Rosehip oil has a high level of antioxidants and essential fatty acids making it the perfect oil for skin recovery of any kind. Think of it as a topical version of your fish oil vitamin, without that awful smell. Since your skin is the largest organ, it absorbs nutrients more effectively than if you were taking a vitamin! So swipe it on and say, "hello beautiful" to your new best friend.
What really surprised me was how long this oil has lasted me.
" Large 4 oz bottle - USDA Certified Organic 100% Pure
Provides the skin with a rich source of antioxidants and essential fatty acids
Helps brighten skin and reduce blemishes/premature aging effects
Ideal for fussy, dry, mature, and blemish-prone skin"
4. Get comfy cozy
When my mom gifted me aloe socks for the first time I thought, "huh, that's interesting." But honestly it sounded weird. How could socks have aloe vera in them?? So I put them on one night in winter and that's when I heard angels sing. I had never felt something so soft ever. I even washed them and they still felt exactly the same after going through the washer and dryer.
I've tried a few versions of aloe socks now trying to recreate that incredible moment of comfort with my first pair. The ONLY brand that nailed it is Earth Therapeutics. They feel like clouds combined with fairy dust, the hopes and dreams of angels and the laughter of children AND they make my feet feel so soft after wearing them overnight. These might be my favorite thing that I've ever owned. (Thanks, mom)
5. Don't forget self-care can happen in any given moment even when you think you don't have the time. Here are my last few favorites to remind me that I'm taking care of myself regardless of what I'm doing.
I've noticed that I drink water much faster if I'm using a straw, but I would much rather be eco-friendly. Living in California means it's hard to get a straw in a restaurant let alone at work or having extras at home. Purchasing this set has been the best experience because I have the tools to clean them and a bag to keep them organized. I especially need that bag since my husband has begun using the straws and my one-year old is fascinated with them so who knows where they could end up after the dishwasher!
This is something I always keep in the bathroom just in case. Once upon a time, when I had been lifting heavy weights regularly, I always ended up extremely sore. I asked a personal trainer what I should do to combat this. I was already taking BCAA amino acids during/after work outs and I was still battling some soreness. How was I supposed to go back to the gym the next day and get back at it? That's where Captain Epsom comes in. Epsom salt can be added to a bath for soaking and relieving soreness, pains and aches. It's great for when your sick, sore from working out or even had a long day of being on your feet!
I constantly have people telling me they're surprised at the number of wrinkles I don't have or how young my skin looks considering I'm in my thirties. It's because even when I'm in the sun or when I was going through my "must be tan everywhere" phases I still covered up my face. I hated facial sunburns growing up and this ended up working in my favor as an adult.
This visor is adjustable, fold-able and one of the best decisions I've made since turning down drinks on a Thursday. It rolls up to fit in luggage. I can still wear a messy bun or ponytail. I can even get it a little wet from the pool without having the worry.
So there you have it! My top 10 Amazon items for self-care. Comment or email me to tell me if you've tried any of these or have been interested in them. I would love to hear if they work for others. I only order a couple things at a time to save cost so feel free to bookmark this article and come back to it later.
